The attached photograph shows Chris Smith & Worcestershire cricketer Alex Gidman handing over the “key” for the minibus to Ruskin Mill College’s principal Dan Alipez, ably supported by Martin Ball.

This ceremony has brought to a grand finale Captain Chris’s year.  The details are somewhat mind boggling - £25K is donated from the Captain’s charity fund. This, in turn, is matched by The Lord’s Taverners plus £10K raised by the College themselves to purchase, run and maintain the splendid Taverners’ green livery bus.

Furthermore the Captain’s charity has provided £2.5K to replace the aging projector and screen in the lounge.  If this were not enough £6.5K will also go to the Junior’s section to introduce them to golf, our club and to experience the frustration, joy and discipline of the great game.

We should all feel proud of rising to, and meeting, this wonderful charity challenge and now hope Chris will take a well deserved rest.

Our support will now turn to our newly appointed captain, Dave Clare and we wish him a year of both enjoyment and success.

After a period in office of what can best be described as “FRENETIC!” the year of the Pirate draws to an end.

Chris’s final event, before jumping ship, was a fabulous SOUL MUSIC night featuring the welcome return of the Groove Meister soul band.

Our club had been carefully arranged, with mood lighting, to give a night club atmosphere, including tasty low price food. The night was well supported and gave good value even if soul music’s not your thing.

Well done Pirate Chris, there will be a wide range of beneficiaries, both from Ruskin Mill College and our own Juniors’ section entirely due to your efforts – you will be a very hard “act” to follow.

Captain's Dinner 2015

Date Posted 9th February 2015 by CMR   |   Posted in General

Time flies, of course, and soon will be the end of Chris Smith’s period as our club captain.

The traditional dinner was held in the club house on Friday 6th February 2015.

Our Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Martyn Ball and a dignified evening began with Grace from our President, Ken Douglas, a tasty three course dinner, the loyal toast from Chairman, Kevin Campbell and a sincere and reflective final speech from the Captain himself.

The evening was concluded with our guest speaker, the comedian Austin Knight, who treated us to a well timed hilarious performance with a great range of gags.

Congratulations Chris to a magnificent year and a well supported, memorable, Captain’s dinner.

The club celebrated Burns’ night with a traditional haggis, tatties & neeps supper.

The evening was expertly organised by Ron Gibson and his social committee.  Our genial host, Jim Ford, initiated proceedings with his usual good humour and set the scene perfectly with the piping in of the haggis (see photo).

We were then treated to a traditional “cheers and good health” (Slawn-je vah) toast,  a concise description of Burns’ immortal memory, toasts to the lassies & the lads followed by modest singing of some Scottish airs.

The evening was well punctuated with plenty to eat and not a little to drink – A splendid evening was enjoyed by everyone. Images of the whole event can be found by taking the following link to Flickr:-

The Club celebrated the passing of the old year and the entrance of 2015 in fine style.  Our genial ever-smiling host, Chris Pearce, ensured the evening went with a swing.  The food was excellent, the music was a blast!  Great fun all round.

Ron Gibson and his team have organised a number of forthcoming events, continuing with our traditional Burns’ Supper  (24th January) followed by an evening of Soul Music in February. See you there.
