Captain's Charity Day 2015

Date Posted 30th July 2015 by RG   |   Posted in General

Club Captain, Dave Clare, recently held his Charity Day in aid of Survive and the Bristol Area Stroke Foundation - and it was a hugely successful day.

22 teams played golf, and scoring was extremely good - and led to a very tightly packed leaderboard, with just 2 shots separating the top 9 teams.

Two teams tied at the top - with the Stockwood Vale team (pictured with Dave Clare - photo courtesy of Nigel Jarrett), sponsored by Chris Jelf, edging out West Coast Express (Mike & James Hodder, Andy Pike and Paul Dando) on countback on 88 points.

A successful raffle and auction took place during the meal after play, and we are pleased to announce that over £2500 was raised for the charities on this day.

Dave would like to thank everyone for their generosity, and also to everyone who helped with organising and running the event - your support is much appreciated.

Club Championship 2015

Club Championship Final Scores:

Josh Denley 77/74 - 151
Stuart Macdonald 77/75 - 152
Rob Lloyd-Scotland 73/81 - 154

Josh Denley added a new name to the list of CSGC Club Champions by beating 3 time champion, Stuart Macdonald, by one shot in difficult conditions on Sunday. 1st round leader Rob Lloyd-Scotland fell away to third (but still won the Net Trophy)
Josh played the first 15 holes of his second round in 1-under, but 3 bogeys to finish allowed Stu a chance to eagle the last to tie. He hit the green in 2, but his 30 foot eagle putt refused to drop, meaning that for the first time since 2003, one of the 'big four' (Wood, Riddell, Macdonald and Hale) was not crowned champion.

Congratulations to Josh - and a special mention to Paul Mason for his 76 net 70 in the afternoon to finish runner up in the Net event.

By the way - just to show the difficulty on the day, CSS was 77+75 - higher than Josh's scores!

Captain's Day 2015

Date Posted 22nd June 2015 by RG/PR   |   Posted in General

Hosted by Club Captain, Dave Clare, this weekend's Captain's Day was held in beautiful sunshine (for the most part!).

JK and his team had the course in superb condition - and the general low scoring proved this, with all the top 10 prizewinners (and three others who missed out) scoring 40+ points!

The excellent hospitality in the halfway house may also have helped!

The winner, with 43 points, was Alex Slowley, just edging out Ben Smith on countback. Don't worry folks - both their handicaps have been 'adjusted' since.....

Three players finished with 42 points - Nigel Jarrett, Tom Lowe and Mark Butcher, while Shaun Pearce, Tom Hunn and Ian Waller scored 41.

Paul Mason took the putting competition over the famous 'Trevor Mildren Links', while Ben Comley won the long drive with just the 320 yards straight into the wind!

The Ladies event, held previously, was won by Fay Austen ahead of Isabel Wright, while Adam Blue won the Juniors Cup.

The day raised a good amount for Dave's charities, but due to several San Miguels, it is still being counted!

Glorious Spring

Date Posted 5th May 2015 by CMR   |   Posted in General

We are all enjoying a warm sunny late Spring, such days to play a few holes should not be missed.

The course at the moment is looking stunning, the lush deep green fairways, the supplementing of many bunkers with lovely silica sand and the peripheral work on the heavy tiger rough areas makes it a real pleasure to play – those aprons really give the greens’ approaches a classy look.

Regrettably there seems to be a paucity of frogspawn, ducklings and swans, though our resident woodpeckers seem to be increasing in numbers – one of the great delights of May golf is to hear the cuckoo around the area of the 15th tee, though the numbers of this wonderful species is suffering a heavy decline.

It’s great to see Dave Jefferies’ covered practice area coming together now, which leads me to wish you all a successful season in achieving, through practice, your own targets and hope that, under Pete Ball’s leadership, we continue to offer a complete golfing and social experience.

Seniors Away Day

Date Posted 1st May 2015 by JS/RG   |   Posted in General

Thirty Chipping Sodbury seniors enjoyed their away day at Cirencester GC. Unfortunately, our beloved captain had not recovered enough from his recent operation to attend.

Club Chairman, Peter Ball had agreed to present the prizes but threw the presentation ceremony into chaos by winning. He beat Mike Spiller on countback with Clive Reynolds and Jim Simpkin rounding out the top four. Tim Bohin won the longest drive with John “Nudger” Brooks taking the nearest the pin prize.

Seniors Secretary John Frank presented a few novelty prizes along with “hardest to read” and “dirtiest” score card prizes. A good day was had by all.

Steve Hindle is making a slow recovery and wishes to thank everybody for their support and best wishes – he is planning to make an appearance at CSGC within the next two weeks.
