Captain Cushley presents Cheque to Charity

Date Posted 10th February 2017 by RG   |   Posted in General

Chipping Sodbury Golf Club has donated £10,000 to local charity St Peter’s Hospice following a year of fundraising activities.

Led by 2016 Captain Jim Cushley, the club raised funds and awareness for Bristol’s only adult hospice, which they chose as their charity of the year for 2016, through a series of activities including golf days, raffles and race nights.

The funds will go towards caring for those with life-limiting illnesses in Bristol and surrounding areas, as well as providing vital support to their families.

Jim Cushley said: “I have personal experience of the care and support St Peter’s Hospice offers to families. My mum received Hospice at Home care in her final weeks before passing away. The support was wonderful and made a real difference to my mum and the rest of the family.

“I was delighted to be able to raise funds for the charity with the help of everyone at Chipping Sodbury Golf Club. The whole club really got behind the activities and we’re thrilled to have raised an amazing £10,000.”

As Bristol’s only adult hospice, St Peter’s Hospice cares for more than 2,670 patients each year as well as supporting family members.

All services are provided free of charge for patients and their families and this care costs around £19,000 a day. In order to continue providing vital care for the people of Bristol, St Peter’s Hospice relies on donations from fundraising and money generated by the 50 hospice charity shops in Bristol and surrounding districts.

St Peter’s Hospice community fundraiser, Esther Hall, said: “A huge thank you to everyone at Chipping Sodbury Golf Club who helped raise an incredible £10,000 for the hospice!

“This donation will help to fund medical and emotional care for patients both at the hospice and in the community. Without the generous support of local organisations like this, we wouldn’t be able to continue providing our services.”

The Cotswold Trophy

Date Posted 7th October 2016 by CMR/RG/DW   |   Posted in General

We recently enjoyed some wonderful golf from the best players in the area who contested the 36 hole scratch competition, The Cotswold Trophy, this is the final event for the CGU Duchess Salver.

The day’s weather conditions were tough with variable, strong swirling winds and number of sharp downpours all of which tested the players’ concentration and skill. Our Course was in great condition thanks to JK and his team, a view echoed by many of the competitors.

The winner was Henbury’s Nick Day, Gloucestershire’s Order of Merit winner, with rounds of 71+74.

He led by 2 after the morning round, ahead of Stuart Macdonald (CSGC) and Haider Hussain (Kendleshire), with 7 others within two shots.

While Haider dropped back slightly in the afternoon, former champion Andy Hale (CSGC) fired the equal best score of the afternoon, 72, to take 4th place.

Macdonald repeated his morning round of 73 to finish on 146, and was joined in the runner up position by Mitch Waite (Filton) who shot 72.

However, Nick, despite a wobble at the 14th, safely secured pars for the last 4 holes for a one shot victory, to regain the title he won in 2014.

Captain Jim Cushley presented the Trophy and praised the players and ground staff for providing us with a feast of high quality golf.

The Centenary Match

Date Posted 25th August 2016 by CMR   |   Posted in General

Many of you may not be aware that Chipping Sodbury GC and Knowle GC were both founded in 1905. In order to perpetuate and celebrate this historic fact an annual match, for the Centenary Trophy is played each year.

The Clubs’ teams comprised both male and mixed pairs playing four-ball match play. The honour and great fun to represent the club under Captain Jim Cushley’s leadership certainly proved to be a marvellous day out with the host’s course being in top class condition and providing a varied challenge to us all.

We were generously hosted by the Captain and his team at Knowle on Sunday 21st August 2016 and, despite threatening clouds and whispers of distant showers, a right royal battle took place. Showing no hint of triumphalism we were delighted with the outcome.
