The Men's Teams

Date Posted 25th August 2017 by RG/RC   |   Posted in General

While the Men's 1st Team capture the headlines in Division 1, the 2nd and 3rd teams have also had successful seasons, under the captaincy of Andrew Harris and Tom Hunn respectively.

The 2nd team finished their season in the darkness late on Tuesday evening with a draw at home to Bristol & Clifton - both sides had already secured promotion to Division 2 for next year, and unfortunately the result meant that B&C claimed the title by the narrowest of margins.

The 3rd team battled in Division 6, facing several clubs' 1st teams - so to earn retention in their last game is still an achievement in itself.

Thank you to Andrew and Tom for their work in running the teams - and to all the players (around 55 in total) who have represented the three teams over the course of the season.

The Stragglers team have been captained again this year by Joe Mclean, with the normal help from Mike Watts. They have had a successful year as well, winning 8 out of 13 games.

Joe is passing the reigns over to Adam Murrin for 2018 - and all male members are invited to sign up to play in these friendly matches next season.

Finally, Clive Reynolds has led the President's Trophy team into the quarter finals of the GGU knockout event. This will be a tough ask, away at Forest Hills, but we wish them every success.

It is with great pride that our first team’s magnificent season can be reported.

Under the leadership of team Captain, Jason Heaven, the team enjoyed a 4-1win in their last match on Sunday 20th August 2017, against our local rivals from The Players’ Club. Securing us 2nd place, in Division 1 of the Bristol and District Golf League, a single point behind Henbury!

This was Jason’s swansong having merged together, over the last 3 years, a group of committed, enthusiastic and, of course, skilful players where parings have come together in support of one another to reveal, firstly an unbeaten home record and secondly, when beaten away, it has only been by the narrowest of margins.

The Captain’s crown passes confident in the knowledge that the foundations are laid for the squad to climb to the next level, challenging to hold their places, with a rare blend of youth (Tom Melling & Adam Blue) and solid experience (Dave Wood & vice-Captain Paul James). It would be entirely inappropriate not to mention other members including Club Champion Stuart Macdonald, Sam Riddell, Robbie Scotland (100% present this season) , Josh Denley and Kurt Rubel.  Apologies are made to a number of other members, whose names do not appear, who have had the honour of representing our club at this high level.

Special thanks come from all team members to their generous sponsors – Ken Douglas (clothing), Jon & Paul Thompson (balls), Mike Watts (range balls) and Jon Jones and the catering staff for the much appreciated post match victuals.

Well to our President Derek Febry who, as you can see from the attached, photo image plodded around the course to lend his support.

Finally Jason wishes to go on record in showing his appreciation of the great team support, spirit, passion and commitment, with real quality in this group who can acquit themselves, both home and away, in any company and with sincerity wishes them good luck in the seasons ahead.

A Helping Hand

Continuing the theme of volunteers who help to make our club so much better here is an image of Dave Newboult, a senior member who has been with us for four years.

Every week Dave cleans our all-weather practice area and makes it smart and presentable. Without doubt such work goes on, largely without being noticed, but it all comes together to create a welcoming atmosphere that consolidates our members’ club.

On behalf of all of us, many thanks Dave.

Is there a contribution you would like to make?
